This book is absolutely geared toward aspiring small private business owners. I want to help these aspiring business owners to achieve their dreams. As a result, this book is simple and approachable and does not get caught up on industry jargon and the glitz and glamour of Wall Street. The aim of this book is to keep it simple.

 

A unique characteristic of this book is the emphasis on “Pre-Work”. If you are looking for a “how to” guide to write up a business plan, this is probably not the book for you. What this book does is to actually de-emphasize the final writing of the business plan document (although it does give you a framework for this) and instead emphasizes the pre-work sections. The pre-work forms the basis of all the questions and thought exercises you should be contemplating to help work through your idea. So instead of being prescriptive and a “how to” resource, this book focuses on the questions and processes to help you contemplate and plan your idea in your own way, at your own pace. The end goal is to help you clarify your idea and as a result be able to write a successful business plan, if you choose to. Nevertheless, the pre-work will help you move forward with the confidence that you have thoroughly thought through what you need to think through before jumping into your endeavour.

 

Another unique feature of this book is that it is intentionally succinct. You can probably speed through this book in less than an hour or two and as a result prime your brain for all the great planning you will need to do. I don’t want aspiring business owners to get bogged down in reading. I want them in action and this book offers a framework for actions that you can constantly refer back to. It is your planning companion to help you turn ideas into action.
